GST rate slabs at a glance

Since the September 2025 GST rate rationalisation, India's GST operates on these principal slabs:

GST rateTypical goods & services
0% (exempt)Fresh food grains, unprocessed food, education and health services
0.25%Rough diamonds and precious stones
1.5%Cut and polished diamonds
3%Gold, silver, platinum and jewellery
5%Most packaged & processed foods, essentials, small garments and footwear (≤ ₹1,000), economy air travel
18%Most goods and services — electronics, branded apparel over ₹1,000, professional services, telecom
40%Aerated & caffeinated drinks, pan masala, cigarettes, luxury cars, yachts, private aircraft

Value-based differences still exist: for example, apparel and clothing of sale value up to ₹1,000 per piece attract 5% GST, while garments above ₹1,000 attract 18%. Footwear follows a similar ₹1,000 threshold. Enter your per-unit sale value above and the tool tells you which slab applies.

HSN vs SAC — which one do you need?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) classifies goods. It is a globally harmonised code — India uses 4 to 8 digit HSN codes on invoices and GST returns, with the number of digits you must report depending on your aggregate turnover (6 digits above ₹5 crore; 4 digits at or below for B2B supplies).

SAC (Services Accounting Code) classifies services. SAC codes are derived from the HSN system and are 6 digits long, typically starting with 99 (e.g. 998313 for legal services).

Not sure whether your item is a good or a service? Just search it above — the finder automatically returns the correct code type.

Why the right HSN code matters

The HSN/SAC code you use determines the GST rate you charge, your input tax credit eligibility, and the accuracy of your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filings. A wrong code can mean overpaying GST, underpaying it (with interest and penalties), or claiming ITC your item is not eligible for.

If you sell online, SellerGrid keeps GST-compliant invoicing, HSN reporting and tax tracking running on autopilot across every channel — so classification mistakes never reach your filings.

Frequently asked questions

What is an HSN code?

HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is a 4–8 digit code used internationally to classify goods under GST in India. Every taxable supply of goods must be reported with its HSN code on invoices and GST returns.

What is a SAC code?

SAC (Services Accounting Code) is the service equivalent of HSN. Services are classified under 6-digit SAC codes (derived from the HSN system) for GST invoicing and return filing.

How is this HSN code finder free?

The tool is offered free by SellerGrid, the commerce operating system for modern brands. There is no sign-up or credit card required to use the finder.

How accurate are the results?

The tool returns the most applicable code based on your product name and description, along with a confidence level and rationale. GST classification can be nuanced — always verify critical filings with a Chartered Accountant or official CBIC notifications.

Why do some products have two GST rates?

Some goods — such as apparel and footwear up to a sale value of ₹1,000 — attract a lower GST rate below the threshold and a higher rate above it. When the rate depends on transaction value, the tool lists every applicable slab with its condition.

How many digits of HSN code must I mention on invoices?

Businesses with aggregate turnover above ₹5 crore must report a 6-digit HSN code on all invoices; businesses up to ₹5 crore report 4-digit codes for B2B supplies. B2C supplies below ₹5 crore turnover are exempt from mandatory HSN reporting.

Is my search data stored or shared?

Your product name and description are used only to classify the item and return the result. No sign-up or personal information is required to use the tool.

Does the GST rate differ for B2B and B2C sales?

The GST rate itself does not change between B2B and B2C sales. What changes is who can claim input tax credit — registered B2B buyers can generally claim ITC on GST paid, while B2C buyers cannot.
